Success can be simple (although most internet business consultants will tell you otherwise).

For example, online marketing is at the root of every successful website. And successful marketing is based on 1 simple principle – put down some money and get back more in return.

However, to make any meaningful progress you need to substitute “some” and “more” with real numbers. You need to know which of your marketing activities worked best and how much money you made.

This is vital to your website’s success because you can’t improve what you aren’t measuring.

In my capacity as an internet business consultant I regularly see thousands of pounds poured into online campaigns without any thought to measuring the results. Many businesses, it seems, are happy just to get a return without understanding its value. Personally, I’m not a fan of the ‘wing-it’ approach because I can guarantee that a good amount of money is being wasted for want of 10 minutes analysis.

I’m sure you’re not one of those businesses and being a smart marketer you won’t want to throw your money away – you’ll want to focus it on the activities which have the highest return and drop those that are wasting your cash.

Here’s where you can gain an unprecedented advantage just by asking a few simple questions that will lead to laser-precise marketing. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1 – How many people visited your website last month? (1000) (example answers in brackets)
Step 2 – How many leads did you generate? (100)
Step 3 – How many sales did you make? (25)

Step 4 – Now you know that you make 1 sale every 40 visits.

Step 5. – How much does it cost to get 1000 visits to your website? (This could be made up from Google Adwords, the cost of your Search Engine Optimization as well as free traffic from e-mail marketing, search engines and other free marketing approaches) (£500)

Step 6 – How much is your average sale? (£100)
Step 7 – Total Sales/month (25*£100) = £2500

Step 8 – Spending £500 on online marketing is generating £2500 sales. (Every pound put down returns £5 – better than a stock market investment!)

Step 9 – Tragically, this vital next money making step is almost always overlooked by every business (and even the odd internet business consultant) despite the fact it is breathtakingly simple… if you invest twice as much in successful marketing you’ll double your returns.

So, £500 spent on marketing makes you £2500
Invest £1000, make £5000
Invest £5000, make £25,000

Equally, if the figures aren’t positive it will give you the chance to stop wasting money on failing marketing. The next step would be to root out what’s not working and improve it. (Simply, reduce your spend to a minimum, make the changes, monitor the returns and as it improves increase your spend again.)

This simple but vital bit of analysis takes 10 minutes and could both Save And Make you thousands of pounds – an essential defence in a economic downturn. Now, isn’t that worth doing?
